We recently enjoyed Easter at a sleepy coastal town only 45 mins from home. It’s a regular hang out for locals (and a lot of farming folk own holiday houses there) as it’s so close and still has that relaxed, untouched feel. The weather was kind so there were daily swims, watching the dolphins cruise past, long walks (dogs are allowed off leash – they love the freedom!), sand castle building, kite flying… 16 kms of white sandy beach to share but you often find you are all by yourself. We enjoyed the company of family friends at this paradise retreat (it’s fast becoming our annual catch up) and it’s lovely to watch their nearly 5 yr old growing.
After a particularly big day – up early to see what the Easter Bunny left, an energetic swim (it’s usually very calm waters but on this day Master 5 spent a lot of time getting back upright and I even had my feet swept out from under me), and indulging in foods we usually wouldn’t, I was woken in the wee hours when I heard coughing… a croupy tight cough…
On checking with his parents (they have taken him to hospital on a couple of occasions previously and been told it’s asthma but don’t use medication routinely), and listening to Master 5 get more upset with every attempt to take a deeper breath and end up coughing (the croupy sound is scary, especially when it’s coming out of you!) I offered “There’s oils that will help.”
And they were happy for me to try… “it can’t do any harm”.
Now, my passion is therapeutic grade essential oils. And as a former nurse – actually is there such a thing (now a yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner) – I L.O.V.E. how healing these oils are… magical even… and of course you can’t expect amazing results if you use just any oils… they need to be Young Living essential oils. Our friends had not yet experienced the oils personally (we were in the process of arranging a time to share with a group of their friends).
Everyone in my circle are used to me saying “There’s an oil that will help.” And many don’t ask further… and that’s their choice. I have gone through the array of emotions – frustration, annoyance, sadness, upset, rejection… and come to a place of allowing – it’s a choice.
I see it as a choice for holistic health – knowing that any treatment of conditions is not creating more harm while ‘treating’ the original complaint…
… a choice for healing – knowing that when the treatment deals with the root cause (research says that all dis-ease can be linked back to an emotion), then true healing can be experienced and not just a band aid for the condition to flare up again by treating the symptom…with the cycle going round and round…
… and I chose nature’s medicine over man-made – knowing that essential oils are accepted by the body synergistically, they restore balance, and pharmaceuticals… well… aren’t and don’t.
… and mostly – I prioritize myself – I deserve the best! (and that’s been a process also… and a whole other story!)
Anyway… back to this sharing…
So from knowledge gathered over the last 5 years of using, exploring, learning and researching oils, the first to pop into my head was to grab Breathe Again™ Roll-On (so easy to apply) and Lavender Essential Oils.
Breathe Again is a blend of oils specially formulated to support respiratory health. It has four powerful eucalyptus oils: Eucalyptus staigeriana, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata, and Young Living’s original Ecuador single, Eucalyptus blue. Eucalyptus oils contain high amounts of cineole, which has been studied for its potential to support healthy lung function (eucalyptus oils aid in awakening the airwaves and opening the nasal passages). The essential oils peppermint (relieves tension) , myrtle (soothing effects when inhaled), copaiba (traditionally used to relieve joint and stomach discomfort), and Blue Cypress (grown and distilled in the Australian outback, for supporting the body’s natural response to irritation) also play an integral part in this blend… and it smells great!
The many properties of lavender essential oil contribute to a vast range of usage. For this situation, its highly regarded as an antiseptic & anti-inflammatory, balances and normalizes body functions, and soothes & relaxes the mind and body… beautiful…
A little Breathe Again rolled onto Master 5’s back along with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to encourage relaxation, the coughing stopped and he visibly calmed down. Getting him into bed, propped up on pillows, he drifted off to sleep – I’m talking less than 10 mins from wake up to sleep.
And that’s the end of it… those who have had children with croup know that it generally means at least 3 nights sleep impacted – not for Master 5. That tight croupy cough was dealt with – and as precaution his parents used the Breathe Again oil for the next few of nights with no more disturbances. Also for the asthma management, the probable trigger has been identified (dietary) and it’s another confirmation they are on track.
“This is not ‘new age’… essential oils were used for hundreds of years by many different cultures, we’re just rediscovering them and their healing powers. And just in the nick of time too!”
FOOTNOTE: don’t be grabbing the eucalyptus oil out of your cleaning cupboard… you need to source Young Living essential oils if you want these results. And I am happy to help you with that!
